A target hides the path
A single price target can look more certain than the evidence allows. It compresses assumptions about earnings, valuation, time and risk into one number. When any of those assumptions changes, the number can become stale before the label changes.
A scenario range starts with conditions instead: if revenue, margin and valuation develop in a specified way over a stated period, then a range of outcomes follows. The purpose is not to predict the exact closing price. It is to show which assumptions create the outcome.
Every scenario needs five visible parts
A range becomes decision-useful only when another person can understand and challenge how it was produced.
- As-of date: the information and market price used as the starting point.
- Time horizon: sessions, months or years—not an open-ended future.
- Operating assumptions: the business drivers that must occur.
- Valuation or market assumptions: how the outcome is translated into a price range.
- Invalidation conditions: evidence that would make the scenario no longer applicable.
Do not mix time horizons
A short-horizon move may be driven by a result surprise, positioning, liquidity or volatility. A multi-year outcome depends more on business growth, cash generation, reinvestment and the valuation applied later. Using a long-term valuation story to justify a weak short-term setup—or a short-term chart move to prove a long-term thesis—mixes different questions.
Keep each scenario attached to its own evidence. A quick-move view can change without altering the long case, while a deterioration in the business can matter even when the price has not reacted yet.
Use the range as a decision boundary
The most useful part of a scenario is often not the optimistic endpoint. It is the condition that would stop you from relying on the case. That condition might be an earnings miss, a margin break, a balance-sheet change or a market-structure level supported by a defined method.
Treat the range as a map of conditional outcomes, not a promise of return. If inputs are missing, stale or unlicensed, withholding the range is more informative than publishing false precision.
A scenario says “this may follow if these conditions hold.” A target is often read as “this will happen.” Keep the distinction visible.
